Hi there and welcome back to my blog!
This week the flat moulds were made, enjoy!
Figures 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 & 6: Getting the Sculpts Finished and Making Walls (O'Connor, 2022).
The cheek pieces and the chin piece were made as flat moulds because they do not go across a very curved part of the face. The pieces were blended onto the board, making sure the edges were as flush to the board as they could be. The cheek pieces attach to the nose piece, so the edge that slots under the nose piece needed to keep its shape so very lightly and gently, the piece was blended onto the board. There were gaps in the sculpts, so more clay was added but making sure that it followed the wrinkles that were already in place. The sculpts were then finished by adding texture: using a toothbrush to create a large porous texture on the wrinkles. A flashing wall/cutting edge was then made around each piece, making sure to leave a decent gap (about 1cm) between the flat mould and the wall because this will be the blending edge and there needed to be enough of this to be able to blend the cap plastic seamlessly without being accidentally trying to blend the silicone piece. The flashing wall was very thick so this ended up being halved. There only needed to be a little wall because it wasn't being used and would have been a waste of silicone.
After this, one wall was made around all 3 flat moulds, to make one silicone mould. This was then covered in release spray/vaseline, because otherwise the clay would have stuck to the silicone when moulding the sculpts.

PlatSil FS-20 silicone was used to create this mould, with red pigment added. Once this had set, the clay was removed and weighed because this is going to say how much silicone needed to be measured out when running the pieces. The silicone mould was cleaned with fairy liquid and a toothbrush and then any rough/jaggered edges were cut and trimmed using a Stanley knife.
This mould was now ready to be used to start running pieces.
Thank you for reading this blog post.
See you next time!
