Hey and welcome back to my blog!
This blog is going to discuss finances regarding the major project and how to make things as budget-friendly and sustainable as possible.
Budgeting
When working on a project either as part of a production, or as an individual, having a budget for expenses is essential. Hammond (2018) says that budgeting allows for planning and tracking of finances, and not only will it save money, it will save time. Budgeting is useful as it enables project managers to view how much money is available to use, so that they are then able to plan which resources and materials they are able to purchase, making sure to stay within the budget.
Typically, the success rate of the project is assessed using the project budget as one of the criteria (Indeed, 2021).
Figure 1 (O'Connor, 2022. Budgeting Chart) shows a table of costs for the materials needed for the beginning stages of the practical work for the major project.
Because the first two images are prosthetics-based, the cost of supplies is rather large (£262.34 minimum) as the student will be creating silicone Figure 1: Budgeting Chart (O'Connor, 2022).
prosthetics from scratch, which is an expensive process. The final two images are still uncertain, unsure so the table of costs does not include any budgeting for those looks. Another table of costs will be completed by the student once they have planned ideas for the final two images.
Other things to consider when planning the budget for the major project:
Location - will this be free or will it need to be booked?
Photographer - is this needed? how much will it cost?
Model fees - will they volunteer for unpaid experience or will they require payment?
The total minimum cost is quite expensive, so would work best for a high budget production, however, if this was a low budget production there would need to be changes in materials used in order to make it more budget-friendly.
Instead of using silicone to create prosthetic pieces, a cheaper way to create them would be to use latex. There are different types of latex that could be used to create different prosthetic pieces, liquid latex prosthetic pieces are very simple to make since no mold release is needed and no heat is needed to cure it. Hot and cold foam latex could be used to create prosthetic pieces; cold foam latex does not require heating to cure, but lacks flexibility compared to hot foam latex, which has to be cured to set
but is flexible and lightweight (Huaixiang, 2012).

This is just one product swap that could make a difference to the table of costs making it more accessible to a lower budget production.
Sustainability
With current issues going on in the world, it is essential to be working as sustainably as possible, which also includes using cruelty-free products. It is known that cosmetics leave behind an environmental impact, but more consumers are aware of this, meaning there is an increase in sustainability in the beauty industry (Martinez, 2022).
Sustainability in the makeup industry would include, cruelty-free products, refillable or recyclable packaging and clean ingredients. Some brands have gone completely zero-waste such as 'All Earth Mineral Cosmetics' and 'Ethique'. These brands are aiming for less waste and more ethics in the makeup industry (ZeroWasted, n.d.). More companies are now also opting for carbon-neutral delivery which aids sustainability.
Due to the area of work - prosthetics - it has proven quite difficult to work sustainably due to the products being used and what they contain. Ordering reusable and ecological products wherever possible would be beneficial, however, upfront costs would be higher, meaning if it was a low budget production this would perhaps not be suitable (Hair and Makeup Branch, n.d.). Whether working on a low budget or a high budget production, it is important to remain as sustainable as possible, even by ordering recyclable or refillable products would make a huge impact.
Thank you for reading this blog!
Until next time,
Alysha:)
