Cutting Master Mould and Preparing New Core

Hi there! Welcome back to my blog. This week is focussed on cutting the master mould and making and preparing a new core ready for sculpting.

Figure 1: Master Mould (O'Connor, 2021).

Figure 1 shows the fibreglass jacket had been removed from the board. It was taken off using a hammer and a chisel. Because a good layer of Polywax was applied prior to fibreglassing, it meant that the jacket came off easily and did not take much work to release this.

Figure 2: Multi Power Tool (Ryobi, 2021).

The rough edges on the fibreglass jacket is a safety hazard because it is sharp and could cut someone if not careful. This needed to be removed and tidied up, so a multi power tool (like the one seen in Figure 2) was used to cut the edges.

PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) is very important, especially when dealing with hazardous chemicals and equipment, because it is there to protect an individual from a particular hazard or number of hazards (Stull, 1998).

Figure 3 shows the process of cutting the sharp edges with the power tool. Gloves, goggles and a respirator mask had to be worn for health and safety purposes, since the fibreglass is a toxic material especially for the lungs. Goggles were worn incase the fibreglass shards flew up and went near the eyes. Gloves were worn to protect the hands from any sharp edges. These edges were sanded to get rid of the rough and sharp edges from cutting it.

Figure 3: Using Multi Power Tool (O'Connor, 2021).

Figure 4: Painting the Core (O'Connor, 2021).

Figure 5: Applying Separator to the Core (O'Connor, 2021).

Figures 4 and 5 show the process of painting the core and applying separator. 3 layers of paint was applying to the core, the paint chosen matches the colour of the clay that will be used when sculpting. This is particularly helpful because it will make the clay sculpt look part of the face. If the core was left white then the clay would look out of place.

Figure 6: Separator (Neill's Materials, 2021).

Separator (Figure 6) was applied to the core and left to dry. Separator is used to float sculpts off of life casts by dissolving in water, meaning the clay can come loose from the cast and can be transferred to a new positive core for moulding (Neill's Materials, 2021). The core was now ready to be sculpted on.

There won't be a new blog post until the sculpting has been completed.

Until then,

Alysha:)
